This past Saturday I went for a ride with a friend up the coast (Hwy 1).  Nice day for a ride.  Sunny weather, 75 degreesish, no fog.  We zig-zagged up to Petaluma to grab a burger.  I was riding my KTM LC4 Supermoto.  I was riding with a buddy who’s not very experienced so the day was easy and slow.

Heading south at the end of the day on Hwy-1 I came around a blind corner to find a Turkey Vulture in the middle of the road.  No bid deal I thought to myself.  I’ll keep my line and go right around it.  Well... Turkey Vultures are somewhat big birds with a large wingspan.  As I approached the bird it looked back, got startled and began to fly away.  The trouble was it wasn’t fast enough.  I came up on it fast enough for the bird to be right in the line of collision with my head!  I did what I have always been told not to do.  All these years... NEVER GRAB THE BRAKE IN A CORNER.  What did I do.  I ducked my head from the impact and grabbed the brakes.

What happened next was no surprise.  The front wheel washed out and I low-sided. The fall wasn’t anything spectacular.  It was slow and controlled.  The trouble all started when the bike and my body reached the shoulder of the road.  If there was a dirt corner I would have walked away.  But this portion of road was right on the Bolinas Lagoon where the road was built up with rocks to protect it from the ocean.  Well... I hid those rocks with my body and began to tumble through them like a rag doll.

When I finally stopped I found myself with a dislocated shoulder, fractured shoulder, fractured wrist, arm, elbow, and leg.  The doc give me 6 weeks (or more).  Stay tuned.
